Craig
to Wrangell, Wrangell to Stikine
On June 29th we were
120 miles from Wrangell. We all wanted to be there for the 4th
of July. Allowing for two stops and two days for weather, it was time to
leave Craig. You could easily spend a week in protected water before
reaching Sumner Strait. However, travel conditions were perfect. We
kept going. Halcyon was the first to reach Sumner and reported good
conditions. Wanderer and Rana Verde were not far
behind. The wind continued to abate and the water was glassy smooth as we
rounded Point Baker, where Sumner and Clarence Strait merge.
The run ended 8.5 hours later, after pausing to empty a
5 gallon jug into a tank.
Penny and I wanted to get up the Stikine River; but,
not in Wanderer. The river has extensive sand bars and shifting channels.
The tour guides and outfitters use jet boats to operate in the shallow
water. We arranged to go with an outfitter delivering kayakers to the Shake
Glacier. Along the way he dropped off their gear at the first cabin they
would occupy on the trip down the river. On the way back, we stopped to
watch two men weigh, measure and tag salmon.
